Check this out!

This is a CD that my new friend Joe Minadeo gave me just a few weeks ago.

I started listening to it and just kept it in the CD player! I listened to it many times all the way through. I used it to produce a test signal for some of my current speaker design work. I just really wanted to know the whole thing well enough to be able to hear the first tiny bit of a track and instantly remember what I was about to hear! Now that I know it I can feel the emotional swells in context and anticipate dramatic moments about to come.

This recording is AMAZING!  ;D

I love it!

It defies all categorization.

It is sort-of instrumental, although there are some voice sounds and some words here and there.

It's full of traditional instruments like real drum set, percussion and bells, acoustic piano, guitar, electric bass, double bass viola, trumpet, a variety of stringed instruments, etc... plus electronic synthesizers and a wide range of environmental sounds, like bugs in the trees and trains in the distance and even the squeal of a FAX machine over a phone line.

All of this is arranged in layer upon layer of musical interludes that range from cool, trippy jazz to pop rock to psychodelic sound collage. But, it is all totally cohesive and flows perfectly from one intellectually stimulating track to the next. It has a wonderful story-like quality to the whole thing.

All of this is quite nifty on its own, but what makes it really worth having is the production and recording quality! It is pure genius!

I don't want to compare it to anything, but this whole collection is filled with brain-sticky ditties and awesome uses of non-musical sounds, even more so than Beck or Radio Head!

But probably the way coolest part of this is the fact that I walked to the house, recording studio where this was made and I know Joe! ;D

First you need to get MinGW.

http://MinGW.org

When you install this, you should put it into a directory just off the root of your main, boot drive, like this:

X:\MinGW

where X: is the drive letter of your Windows installation.

After you install it, you need to edit your OS environment table.

Right click on My Computer. Go to Properties. Click on the Advanced tab. Click on the button labeled "Environment Variables".

If you have never had any kind of C or C++ compiler on your system before, you will need to add new variables to the environment.

Click on the New button.

Variable name: include
Variable value: X:\MinGW\include

Click on the New button.

Variable name: lib
Variable value: X:\MinGW\lib

Make sure you replace X: with the correcxt driver letter for your Windows installation.

You also need to edit the value of "Path". Select it in the list below and click on the Edit button.

Add this to the beginning of the Variable value: line

X:\MinGW\bin;

Note the semicolon at the end of this statement. Just add this to the beginning and do not remove any other portion of the value of Path. Again, replace X: with the appropriate drive letter.

That's It!  :o :P %) ;) ;D

You now have GCC ready and waiting for you at the command prompt, just like you would on a Linux machine!

Now you need to install Dev-C++ so that you have a nice GUI interface to an Integrated Development Environment for GNU C & C++.

Go here:

http://bloodshed.net/dev/devcpp.html

And get Dev-C++ WITHOUT MINGW!

When you install it, it will find that you already have the most up-to-date version of MinGW (GCC) installed on your Windows machine!

Construction / Community Laser Projector Build!
« on: May 09, 2010, 10:47:40 am »
Hey everyone!

My friend rMuD has just joined the forum. He's the guy who sold me my gas rig. He actually scored it for me in 04 but I waited forever to go get it on 01/17/05.

Anyway.....

He wants to build quite a few solid state projectors for in house demonstrations and technical development.

He was thinking about the same thing I was... We should all get together and get all the parts we need to make projectors for everyone who wants them.

There are some of us on this forum who are particularly talented in certain areas we need. Still others have resources, like materials, time and location.

When we get all the stuff we need to make all of the projectors, we can all get together here for Yet Another Akron Basement LEM 2010 and actually build all of them at the same time!

I think if we get enough enthusiasm for Project Projector, we could build projectors for a few people who might not be able to make it to Akron.

I'm just looking forward to being able to work with people who have already done it well and learning everything I can.

Who's in?

rMuD

James.  :)

BTW I can build LaserBoy DACs for quite a few of them! ;)

And Now For Something Completely Different! / Janteloven
« on: April 30, 2010, 04:47:12 pm »
Pronounced YAN-ta LO-ven (like 2 words)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jante_Law

I just met a guy from Norway who told me about this. This is why Northern Europians are so chill!

Almost everyone there understands Janteloven.

Good stuff!

It's freakin' cold there. I guess they just don't have anything better to do than figure out ways to get along with each other.

I was watching MSNBC and their coverage of the Senate hearing of Goldman Sachs.

They beeped out the word "shitty", like 16 times.

This word was a reitteration of the same word found in email evidence. So it was a quote, presented while questioning the deposed, in a public hearing, asked by senators of The United States of America!

What are they afraid of? Do they think the FCC will fine them for allowing a US Senator to say the word "shitty" on their broadcast?

This is obviously wrong and a violation of the civil rights of all citizens and residents of The USA

and that's just shitty.

LaserBoy !!! / Color Rescales in LaserBoy
« on: April 22, 2010, 10:00:49 pm »
Has anybody tried this yet?

If you copy this into a text file in the LaserBoy/txt/rescales/ folder, you can set the file name in the LB TUI for each of the R, G, B & I color signals.

Files need to be ASCII, every table must start with a value of 0. This is to reinforce the connection between r = g = b = 0 is ALWAYS black because the laser must be off when there is zero volts on the modulation inputs of all the lasers.

All the numbers must also be even because in the binary form, the least significant bit needs to be open for the markers of end of frame, unique frame, and such.

Check it out!

Can you see what is different?

That was no small task!

I had to flip around the order of things in almost every TUI function.

Check out this version of in.ild. I fixed a few things.

About This Forum / LaserBoy.org
« on: April 06, 2010, 02:09:18 pm »
Hey everybody!

Extra Stimulus Inc. has just registered the name laserboy.org.

Very soon I will be setting up and deploying a monster Linux server just to host this new domain name.

It will be the new home of this forum and it will also serve an ftp repository, document mastering services like wiki, group voip, and any other groovy thing we can think of to throw on there.

I will also be able to offer accounts on the server to specific LaserBoy Forum members to create their own web sites and stuff.

It will still all be free, but I will need to start accepting donations, as this will clearly be an expense that can be separated from maintaining the akrobiz.com server.

If you build it, they will come.

James.  :)
