Holy Crap!

I saw a very OT discussion cropping up in Gary's category about Microsoft, so I made a new topic where people could go on about it without putting more stuff in the Spaghetti category.

What's the big deal?

There are a lot of legitimate things to bring to light here!

Microsoft has LOTS of bad issues to deal with. They've got several operating systems up in the air right now and they are screwing with all sorts of digital media content rules too!

If you hadn't noticed, I poked some fun at Mac OSX and Linux too.

Maybe some people are just a bit TOO sensitive when it comes to this issue. Maybe those people should think about broadening their horizons a bit.

Go online and look for "XP downgrade rights" to find some amusing material...

 What's up with that?

MS has come a long way ???

and what OS are you using right now Dean?

hell vb6 is your development platform. and it works ...

everyone bitches about this or that but never gives credit for what it DOES offer..

Windows allows people with no previous experience to reap the benefits of computers. They can use them for countless tasks without realy having to understand them.. This allows people to focus their lives on other tasks and perform those tasks with greater efficiency.

Paperless offices, document storage and retrieval, mathematical calculations, driving directions, tracking trucks, you name it.. a computer can make your job less cumbersome. but not if you have to spend all that time learning about the computer first.

MacOS does the same thing but is less popular due to Microsofts strong foothold on the business market..

When it comes to servers, i agree that linux kills Microsoft hands down..

The motivating forces behind Microsoft are different than any other OS.

MS is a marketing company.

They are not a technology company.

Their primary objective is to make money; not to develop the human understanding of computer science.

An ignorant computer user is a Microsoft customer for life.

MS is also the last OS on Earth that is still a "Personal Computer" OS.

Everything else is based on the UNIX main frame idea. Everything else is POSIX compliant and can make direct use of the whole world of GNU and the Free Software Foundation.

FreeBSD, Linux and MacOSX kernels are all built with the same GCC!

Every other OS has the outer layer of architecture that protects the OS from malicious attacks.

Since there is no real money behind free technology, it is not being pushed into use. As a matter of fact, it is being pushed out-of-use by MS.

The idea of buying an OS that REQUIRES the user to employ "anti-virus" software is absolutely RIDICULOUS!

Microsoft has done a lot of great things to get ordinary people to use computers, but their time has come and gone.

There is NO SUCH THING as a "Personal Computer" anymore!

That went away when people started hooking up network connections... and then the I-80-386 came out and the world had a microprocessor that was sophisticated enough to run a UNIX like system. That was 1993!

Some time in the future, humanity has to learn the honest-to-god principals of computer science.

It might sound outrageous now to think that everyone should have a good working knowledge of UNIX, but consider the fact that only a couple hundred years ago, knowing how to read and write was a luxury of the richest and smartest people.

Let's see... I have a small Linux PC, a P3 with Win ME (I watch TV and listen to music on that one), an Athlon dual-boot for ME and XP Pro, and a new Vista64 machine.
I'm looking to get a laptop sometime, but I'd rather have XP than Vista. I like Win ME the best, too bad they obsoleted it... Don't know anything about Win 7, I hope it's
not another Vista...

It just bothers me that you can't just walk into Best Buy and grab a cheap PC off the shelf with something other than the latest MS on it.

correct, they want just the opposite, for people to not have to understand computer science to use computers...

An ignorant computer user is a Microsoft customer for life.

and thats why they have the bigest market share.. the tapped in to the largest market

WRONG !, have you used a cell phone lately ???

yeah, i wonder why MS OSs are targeted

Yes it is...
and there is nobody around to stop them, and its a crying shame. The big shame is that PEOPLE ARE DUMB ! ! ! !

see market share diagram

debatable at best

I agree with that 100%

nope, we will be extinct first because of people like you making smart software.. its thinking like that, that will have us extinct due to our own arrogance. we will destroy ourselves before humanity ever has a chance to develop that far.

No. MS is not a software company.

Bill Gates did not write MS DOS.

As a matter of fact, he sold it before he bought it from the people who did write it.

Microsoft's strategy has always been marketing.

They have never been known to do it first, or even do it best. They just know how to pick a winner, copy it, make it their own and shove everything else out of the way.

That's marketing; not technology; not computer science; not software development.

The only time knowlege currupts anyone is when it is held by greed and used to control people.

I can understand why MS is continuing on their own path. If they decided to join the rest of the computing world and become POSIX, they would not be able to compete with free stuff.

no thats football, natural selection, the olympics, dog breeding, but not marketing...

MS has NO NEED to market unless its to deal with BAD publicity brought to them from OTHER os manufacturers..

I would say that Microsoft is largely (not by any means totally) responsible for making computers common household items. That's a good thing. For the amount of technology that you get inside a box for less than $600 today, it's just mind blowing!

That never would have happened if it wasn't done via marketing.

So that is what makes it possible for me to get amazing hardware for super cheap and install Linux!

That's a good thing!

So quite bitching and start thanking MS for making it all possible.
