possible to make a short/full length film in vectors?
« on: February 10, 2010, 08:58:37 am »
i am teaming up with a photographer to make a short film, just a hobby project. and i thought about if anyone have ever tried to accomplish some sort of "real" cinematic approach to the vector fields of laser "cinema"
what i mean is to short the movie in normal ways but with focus on simple environments and strong shadow/light conditions.
this will then be treated in maybe a photoshop action script that detects edges and then everything is vectorized in a raster graphics to vector program.

final result is a short movie in vector graphics thereby moving from having the focus on the form of laser projecting to the content of laser projecting.

dont know if this is done before but i find the laser vectors really beautifull and the combination of an 8dac with two channels reserved for sound just feels like an interesting medium for short movie diy filmmaking people i think.

maybe we could in the end coordinate a short film laser vector festival hehe

well just ideas. whats your thoughts? :-)

and another thing, a firm owning a big creative neighbourghood in copenhagen is looking for ways to promote themselves with logos etc. there is a huge silo so i thought of making a green laser projector and letting it shine every night with their logo maybe.
and my question is:
is it safe for the projector to let it run for like 8 hours in a row or is their some complications i dont know of?

Yes it is possible, in fact I have developed a software application where the end result is similar to what you describe.  Look for an announcement soon!
Also do a search for TraceIt.

There are even some laser porno movies (seriously!).

I don't think you will have any problems leaving a green laser on for days at a time.

the only issue i see is this..

Whats the point of doing a flat movie on a wall with a  laser, a standard projector can do that. The art of laser display is amazing because of the beams. Sure graphic shows are cool, but its all about the beams man...

There are also some utilities out there that can convert SVG animation into laser vector shows, but that's not a real camera image converted to vector.

It's nice anyway....

nice reps.
thank you james for the quickie on green lasers!

well i get your point blinkenlights.
but as i see it the difference between vector films and color films is as big as between color films and b&w films. so again to put clearly
"a skanner darkly" based on phillip k dick featured a strange form of traced animation based on real footage. the medium in itself was appealing and interesting while the content was at the same time really nice it prooved to be a good result and unique.

so to put up my pros for laser movies it would be:
unlimited focus length
narrow frames in which you gotta put your creativity (stimulating)
new sense of depth in images
simple and clean animation based on actual footage (strange environment)
possibility to project on clouds, fog and smoke without the fozzyness created when using nomral projectors.
fascinating BEAMS!

laser shorts as a medium could proove really interesting and community creating.

It seems like you actually care about things based on their artistic value.

What is wrong with you? !!! ???  %)  ;D

hehe i guess maybe my parrents feeded me too old milk  when i was a kid. and maybe they even added a little illegal flava  >:D hehe

no just kiddin'
its just that i really dig this medium and as i dont want the traditional film medium only used for hollywood cry movies i also would like to broaden the horizon of the laser medium.

hey johan,

did you ever make any progress on this?  I would love to see how well you can capture emotion/subtlety and mood within a laser short.
