Dr Lava Flexmod Drives???
« on: January 31, 2010, 03:55:24 pm »
I have decided to go with Dr lavas flexmod drivers for my RGV build.

Is it possible to use one wall wart say 5v 2.5 amps to drive all three?

or a 9V at atleast 1.5 amps?

A 50mw Green

RED
Common designation: LPC ; LOC (Long Open Can)
Manufacturer rated output power: 150mW
Manufacturer rated operating voltage: 2,35v
Manufacturer rated operating current: 205mA
Safe operating current: ~350mA
Enthusiast operating current: ~420mA
Maximum operating current: ~500mA
Average output power: ~250mW
Recommended driver: rkcstr MicroDrive ; DrLava FlexDrive

VIOLET
Common designation: SF-AW210
Manufacturer rated output power: 120mW
Manufacturer rated operating voltage: 4,8v
Manufacturer rated operating current: 115mA
Safe operating current: ~180mA
Enthusiast operating current: ~200mA
Maximum operating current: ~250mA
Average output power: ~130mW
Recommended driver: rkcstr MicroDrive ; DrLava FlexDrive

well you only have 320 going to the B and V so the G is left with plenty, BUT the problem is in the way of power, the problem is voltage drop across the diodes.

Im not sure if 5 volts if gonna be enuff, i would go with a 9 volt wart, but DrLava could answer this question better than me.

i run my reds at 30 and as long as they have good heat sinks, they are fine.. that V should be fine at 180 with good heat sink..

but again the single power supply should have more voltage i think.

again ask the Dr.

What is your reasoning for more voltage?

You are going to have to put larger heat sinks on the FlexMod's at that current.

You will be fine with a 5V, 1Amp (or higher current rating) wall power supply without additional heatsinking on the drivers.  The dropout for the FlexMod is very low at that current.
This seems like a good fit:

the extra 0.1V will give a little operating headroom for the blu-ray.

I have on hand a 12V 2A with a 5V 2A pwr supply I was gonna use the 12V for a fan and the 5V 2A line for all 3 drivers.  I am a bit out of it atm... worked 10pm till Noon and am currently trying to unwind so I can head back in for 10pm tonight...   Can I just attach the 5V line to a small Break out board and attach each power in and ground of the 3 drivers right to it?

thanks

Also I have one of your boards that stopped working.. (I think it was due to my heavy soldering hand... can I mail it back along with some cash and see if you could fix it?)  thanks again

This PS is for an external hard drive or CDROM drive. It has the same power connector as what you find inside your computer. You could get an extra mail Molex connector from a HD power splitter and not have to chop the cord.

This must be a switcher, so the voltage will be quite stable at just about any current draw.
