Shinp DL-55 Double Tunnel Laser
« on: February 03, 2010, 06:17:59 am »
Hey! :P
Has anyone calibrated a Shinp DL-55 Double Tunnel Laser before ( http://www.szshinp.com/en/products.asp?nsid=3&pid=19 ) ? I have been given one thats probably beyond calibrating. Ive been told as long as the beams point towards the wall i'm doing well but id like to see if I can get the patterns lined up correctly. Also need to replace a reflection mirror (I used an oval shaped mirror but it reflects fuzzy)

I have spent some time on this and doesn't appear to be much hope  :-[

Some pics here of my buggered laser:

Thanks!

Welcome to the group. Introduce yourself. We like to know the members.
Where are you located, how long have you had this cancer we call lasers.
What level of experience do you have, any electronics or programing experience?

There are many people here with a hugh amount of knowledge. We could bury you in information, so we need to know where to start.

With that said. Lets start with the easy fix.

Is the mirror you replaced a front surface mirror? Meaning is the reflective surface is on the "front" of the glass instead of the back.
You can easily tell by first finding something that won't scratch the mirror like a q-tip. Then touch it to the surface that you want the laser to reflect. If you are able to "touch" the reflection of the q-tip with no gap, then you have a front surface mirror. If you have a gap, then its standard rear surface mirrors. Rear surface mirrors will cause a ghost image or fuzzy image.
I suspect you used a rear surface mirror.

Aligining a laser projector is an art form sometimes it can be challenging sometimes very easy.
By calibrating I assume you mean align all of the scanned images to point in the same direction all in a line. (not all scanned images on top of each other).
Once we determine your experience level we can try to get this thing aligned better.

I'm not set up on Skype. Besides I'm long asleep by the time you are just getting going. I see the time on some of your posts.

Hi LaserJock/ James!

Well your right about the mirror I do need a front surface mirror so thanks for the tip! I may have to buy a replacement any ideas where I can get replacement parts?

This laser uses 20kpps stepper motors so fine tuning it is a mission. It was in parts when I got it. When the laser is powered it does a basic calibration to get its current position, each stepper motor x and y reverses until it hits a small lever thats sort of adjustable but 1mm left or right makes a huge difference in laser position and I can never get it aligned fine enough (mirror holder has a screw on it which hits the lever on the stepper motor holder).

I'm from Wellington New Zealand not Aussie(but u were close!)  ;D

I had a look at the pictures.

No wonder you're having a hard time aligning that thing!

It's all stamped steel!

Looks like the only way to get elevation on the green shown in pic 7 would be to bend the bottom corner of the chassis.

Not much fine adjustment room there!

oh I get ya now Nozzie land instead of aussie land!

Maybe I will just use it for parts, wonder what interesting projects I can do with 2 red lasers and one green - total output is 201mW so not great!

I'm just being a jerk. Noo as in New.... zzy as in Ozzy; Noozzy-Lund. Not all American are so weird.  :-\

It looks like it all works. If you really wanted to fix it, you could put some thought into making better adjustable mirror mounts.

Four scannners in one box is pretty impressive!

It's like....... a Quad Laser!  ;) ;D

What kind of control input does it have? Can you actually drive the X and Y inputs on each head?

Ha Ha, I don't want to mess with u Americans, u might blast me with ur Star Wars Satellite laser system or is it that B52 project that I should be scared of?

I can control x and y but lasers are paired to move at the same time, not individually. There was supposed to be a mix happening to make yellow but its impossible to make a straight line to mix the red and green!

How would u mod the frame to make it precise? It appears to set itself up to fail in that regards! its pretty solid steel so bending wont happen :-)

Gadget glad I could help a little. I'm sure there is a way to make this thing work. We love a challenge. We are masters of taking something that is meant for one thing and making it do something completely different.    Right James...

James I'll try to get set up on Skype. No promisses I'll use it very often though.

I think if I had that unit, I'd keep working on it to make it better.

Since it is made of stamped steel and there are no fine screw type adjustments, I wonder how the manufacturer aligned it in the first place?

This unit is made to hang from the ceiling, correct?

Does the alignment change when it's sitting on a table vs. hanging?

Looks like you can hang it or you can leave it on a table as it has several rubber feet on the bottom. when the sides are back on the whole thing locks together and doesn't really move much. I guess aligning the thing on the table will more or less the same when hanging.

I cant see how they aligned when the made it either! maybe its all todo with the mirrors?

I think they probably align these much the same way they align car doors when they put them on at the factory. They know where to put a hunk of palette wood in the frame and they slam the door on it a few times until it warps the steal frame into shape.

I have one of the DL-33's  minus the laser modules...

Its not to hard to align them and yes it has to do with the mirrors.

You really need the same exact size mirror on that mount..
