Joint Development / SaLiVA - new format
« on: April 03, 2009, 06:35:47 pm »
SaLiVA is Standard Laser Vector Art
or Super Awesome Laser Vector Art

The idea is to have a file type that that is truly flexible and usable from both an artistic and technical standpoint.

all good projects start with a great name (i know thats not true)

Well I just got back from NY:NY yesterday afternoon and boy are my feet tired...

Time square is amazing and i picked up some great one liners just listening to conversations as i walked around.

We arrived early and ate at this little Italian restaurant off Broadway, i had the Greek salad and it was AMAZING ! !

Mark and I hung out in the Square for a bit and then headed down to the Nokia Theater.

Ryan Waters met up with us inside and we chatted a bit about Lasers, ILDA, the NY theater unions and so on in that fashion.

--------------------------------------------------
The show started out strong but I was quick to form opinions about what parts i liked and which ones i did not.

For the most part it was entertaining and kept my attention however i have some complaints so lets get them out of the way first.

The intelligent lighting was overused and it washed out the RGB aerials most of the time they were on.

The crowd scanning effect which consisted of 2 disco balls, one at each corner of the stage, was prety but hurt my eyes...

The imagery was often to literal, Mike Dun is an exceptional artist, but sometimes i want to use my imagination.

The fat beams were too fat for my taste.

ok now that im done complaining lets get to the good stuff.

I Love Pink Floyd and the sound system was great so i got to experience it. Lots of low and clear mids and highs.

The aerial fat beams were BIG and very bright.. he had an argon going through one of those Mischita gratings and that was a pretty cool effect.

there is never enough red but the reds were pretty good in the graphics and aerials.

The video projectors, which were setup to cover the entire back of the stage, were a great addition to to the lasers and did not take anything away from them (like the often too bright intelligent lighting).

The aerial purelight was amazing when the lights were out..
My favorite song was one of these days (the last song)
here is a video of that from the Chicago show.

The reason i liked that one was because of the RGB in the beginning of the song when the rest of the lights were out. It just swings back and forth in time to the music streaking rgb bands behind it and it looked awesome in person. I have a bunch of pics to be posted later tonight.

Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so..

A new idea is delicate. It can be killed by a sneer or a yawn; it can be stabbed to death by a joke or worried to death by a frown on the right person's brow..

The public have an insatiable curiosity to know everything. Except what is worth knowing. Journalism, conscious of this, and having tradesman-like habits, supplies their demands.

Do you know what a pessimist is? A person who thinks everybody as nasty as himself, and hates them for it.

He that is of the opinion money will do everything may well be suspected of doing everything for money.

Love me or hate me, but spare me your indifference.

It is the customary fate of new truths to begin as heresies and to end as superstitions.

The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.

A thick head can do as much damage as a hard heart.

Other software / Sketchup/Ruby
« on: March 03, 2009, 08:54:07 am »
Ok here is the question.

i posted here
http://www.photonlexicon.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6053
about a path to free 3d laser frames.

With DrLava's new software i thought i would bring it up again but in a slightly different light.

Attached to the above thread is a free plugin that exports sketchup drawings to DXF.

The plugin does not do color, and could use some tweaking. AS IS it does handle basic shapes well and i have used it myself. I just believe that with a base like the provided plugin, anyone with ruby experience could make some improvements.

I know that James knows allot about DXF so he may be able to answer any questions regarding the dxf file structure.

Anyone... anyone?
