SELEM 2009
« on: June 05, 2009, 07:33:23 am »
I saw James refer to SELEM 2009 and thought I would start a thread.
I plan to go. I've never been to SELEM, from what I read it is hugh. I hope to see friends from Bastment LEM 2009 there.

There were just about 20 people (maybe 19) in 2008. I bet it will be a lot bigger this year; possibly more than twice. I'm pretty sure I know quite a few people who want to go this year for the first time.

The stage area was pretty crowded with computers and laser projectors. I can't imagine where we would put more than twice that amount of stuff. Maybe some of it will end up in the audience area and up in the balcony. Be there when the doors open and stake your claim!

Be ready for total, non-stop laser insanity.

James.  :)

I'll probably pop in for a bit to look around.  I doubt I would stay for the whole thing or bring my equipment, though.

James, I saw your name on the SELEM list over on PL. Are you really going? If so it will be good to see you again.
Hyena, hope to see you there too.

I will have my new projector done by then. I can't wait to show it off.

I really want to go, so I probably will, but Terry keeps asking me why. It costs quite a bit to make the trip and so far lasers haven't made our company any money.

I would have to say that it was easily the most outstanding event I've ever been to; in a very unique and deeply satisfying way. I've never met so many people who were so clearly intelligent. I met people there that I would like to have as good friends for the rest of my life.

BlinkinLights - You asked for it. You got it. Come on James we didn't nearly have enough time to talk when I was there for Bastment LEM.

This weekend I went to Florida LEM (FLEM). I had a blast. Laserists are a very unique group of people that I fit right in with. So much knowledge and willing to share it. I can't wait for SELEM.

I just signed up for the SELEM.  What are your plans?  I need to figure out where I will stay, etc.

Here is the info for the Holiday Inn I grabbed from PL.
I have reservations here.
Lazerjock

Update on group rate for Holiday Inn Express:

Just got off the phone with "Gerry" (female), and she confirmed a rate of $75 (plus tax) for all SELEM attendees. (WOOT!) This rate is good for Friday, August 14th through Sunday, August 16th. You can stay one, two, or all three nights - doesn't matter. The general manager (Cathy Newton) was not in when I called, but she will also know about this rate if you call and Gerry is not in for whatever reason.

Note: They *do* have non-smoking rooms available. So Steve, if you had a problem last time, maybe they put you in a smoking room by accident? Be sure to ask for non-smoking next time; they'll hook you up.

So, if you want to book a hotel room for SELEM, call (828) 465-7070 and tell them you are from PhotonLexicon and you will be attending SELEM. Then give them the dates that you need a room for.

They are holding a block of 10 rooms for us until August 5th. They will give us extra rooms at the group rate *if* they are available (which they probably will be). But after August 5th, you'll have to pay full price. (Something around $90 I think, plus tax.)

If you need to cancel, you can do so without penalty as long as you call them by 6 PM on the day you are supposed to arrive.

Note that if you book on-line, there may be other restrictions, and you won't get the PhotonLexicon rate. To get this rate, you need to call the hotel directly at (828) 465-7070.

I'd like to see if I can go more on the cheap this year.

Who all is going down from NEO?

Can we car-pool?

I don't really mind sharing a room with up to three other people.

Maybe we should have another Akron Basement LEM before SELEM!

Has anyone heard from LaserGuy216?

Let's get an NEO check in list!

I might show up Friday night if there is something going on.  I won't make it to the dinner at 6pm, though.  But, I could be there by around 9.  Are there any good pubs to hang out at?  I looked it up on Google and it only takes me about an hour from my house to get there.

There is a place in downtown Newton or whatever... The whole upstairs is reserved for laser weirdos.

I'll be heading down   but we are making a vacation of it, camping for a week beforehand at Virginia beach.  I hope the laser equipment survives the car, it will be LOADED!
See you all there :)
