I don't know how anyone could dislike this man.  I think the reason that Windows is how it is and Linux is how it is is because that Gates thinks in human terms and Linux folks think in computer scientist terms.  In the end, if the product doesn't work for uneducated folks who can't even program a VCR then the product is a failure.  I think Bill gets that not everyone is created equally and tries to help them all.  Bill Gates should receive a Nobel Peach Prize.  He has done so much more than Obama.  Gates gives his own money away to help to needy.  Obama just gives MY money away.  Gates and Windows are good.  Obama and Linux are the devil.

MS and Apple decided to put "PC's" in to the main stream and neither company took any care to actually protect the users from the world of hackers and virus..

  While I'm not a big Linux fan, I believe that its existance has done much behind the scenes to advance computing in ways that would be difficult to measure, and has had great influence on other products. I concede that Linux is not for everyone.

  Mac is a closed-loop in terms of both hardware and software making it a unique attraction for many... Mac has clearly raised the bar on what we can expect from a computer, thankfully (long before the PC was nothing but a pitiful boring business machine).

  As for good old Bill, the richest man around, I give him credit for re-directing his efforts to humanitarian causes in  recent years (just as Ray Kroc, the founder of McDonald's and his widow have done). I don't see other close rivals such as Warren Buffet doing the same. Bill still makes for a good punching bag, though.

  Even with all of that said, it still bothers me that I walk into Best Buy and find that all PC's come with Windows. We deserve other choices... Choice and competition are proven to be the best way to move forward!!!

Stores have tried putting Linux on PCs and no one bought them.  You guys need to get a grip on reality.  People don't care about the junk you guys are harping on.  They just want a cheap computer that works for them.  Linux is cheap but it doesn't work for them.  If Linux wasn't free then some company could spend some money to make it useable and then maybe it would become a competing O/S.  But when you give stuff away you can't afford to make it very good.  That's why the whole open source thing is stupid.  People don't have time to work for free.  They have to put food on the table.  So, at best, open source is a bunch of crapware that no one wants.  There is some good open source software but it is usually starts as someones hobby and then gets abandoned or left behind while they go on to work on a pro version.  But, even with Linux, the free versions always end up being less than the paid versions.  There is nothing evil about MS Windows or stores that sell it.  The problem is that the UNIX folks weren't smart enough to make a move when the time was right.  Too late now.  Now they all whine that Microsoft is evil and did everything the wrong way and they can't even give away the crapware they are peddling.  If Bill Gates was an idiot, maybe there would be some UNIX version of an OS on our PCs.  Or maybe we would all be paying too much for Apples.  Who knows?  Deal with it.

competing? its WINNING ! ! more applications instances run in the linux environment on the web EVERY DAY than on all of the wintel machines out there..  ever heard of cloud computing.. get a grip. Windows boxes are fast becoming smart terminals for web based content and applications. and guess what.. most of that shit runs on LAMP servers.

WRONG ! ! !the "linux folks" were never interested in making a move. at the time the PC was UNABLE TO RUN UNIX. Linux x86 was born AFTER the x86 processor, not before. There was no move to be made. IBM was funding microsoft at the time and had a strangle hold on the market from the get go. Do you not remember your basic computer history? where do you come up with this stuff Gary.
