I like the fact that I have to work and plan to be able to afford things. I also find that dreaming about having something very special is, in many cases, more enjoyable than have it.

Hard work and accomplishment is its own reward.

If all I cared about was having so much money I could buy anything, then I would have just bought a professional laser control system and been done with it. As a matter of fact, I have ALWAYS been this way! When I was a little kid I made model rockets out of paper towel tubes and cardboard. Yes, they flew just fine.

I am absolutely NOT jealous or envious of Bill Gates. He can't possibly have any kind of normal life. He will never want for anything ever again. What does he have left to aspire to?

Now everyone is supposed to think he's such a cool guy for giving his money away. Think about it! He is spending his money to shape the world to his liking, probably to amass more power within it. If money is the ONLY motivation to do something, its already WRONG!

Gates acted out of GREED and has based his empire on GREED.

He stole the idea for the mouse, he stole the idea for a windowed OS, and pushed development to BEAT apples launch date.. why? greed

He has based the business model for his technology on BUSINESS not TECHNOLOGY.
Teh company as a whole acted out of greed when they disputed the request to make their document format open. They  LOST that battle thanks to help from openoffice.org.

The technology that is presented by MS is never new and inovative, its always just a more expensive propriatary version of some other great idea. Thats how bill gets his piece of the pie.

Fact is that M$ screwed the pooch early on and now they have alot of people really pissed off.

I said it before and I'll say it again.

Microsoft is NOT a software company. It is a marketing company.

They bring other peoples ideas to market for their own profit.

They have such a small amount of confidence in their own product that they simply can not allow it to exist in an open market. They must seek out and destroy any and all competition.

If they tried to compete in a real market, they would be BLOWN AWAY.

There is only ONE reason why anyone should be happy with anything they do.

If you bought stock in them early on, you love them.

My first job as a professional computer engineer (apart from being VP and CTO of my own comapny) was with a telephone technology company in 1998. It was my job to maintain a heterogeneous network of OS/2, Win95/98, WinNT and Linux. I also wrote C++ for all of those operating systems. I went out on several service installations. I was in giant rooms over-filled with Sun, Silicon Graphics, IBM AIX & OS/2, HP, proprietary telephone switching computers, etc, all working together perfectly.

The weakest link and the most inhibiting factor was ALWAYS the personal computers running Windows, sitting on the desks of the operators.

I know a little bit about what I'm saying.

Gary, how much time have you spent developing code for any other OS beside Windows?

What does the amount of time I have spent developing code on other OSes have to do with Bill Gates?  How much time have you spent developing code for Windows?  LaserBoy does not count, by the way.  I spent several years working on code for Solaris and Linux.  I've also spent a couple years working on software for embedded systems.  How many years have you spent actually writing professional code that is being used outside of your house?

But, back to the topic.  You have to admit it is pretty retarded to say that Microsoft would be blown away if they competed in a real market.  What real market are you talking about?  Where everyone gives stuff away and rides unicorns to work?  That isn't a real market.  Your idea of a real market and a real software company doesn't exist.  You hate Microsoft because they don't match your idea of what "good" is.  You think they are out to get you and your friends and that bothers you like you thought ILDA was out to get you.  If you are just going to make up your own reality then you win.  I don't care.

Linux just happens to be ONE OS who's kernel and every other executable on the system is built BY and FOR............................. GNU!

Darwin is another one; as in the kernel of Mac OSX! (also open source)

The list of operating systems, for every kind of use, is endless; literally.

They ALL are built BY GNU for GNU!

Which is why I can truthfully say that GNU GCC is the best compiler on Earth.

I get that most people don;t use any of those GNU O/Ses you are talkng about.

Computer Science should always be cutting edge, new ideas. That's what MS looks for, steals and then makes us pay and pay and pay and pay and pay for.

There are plenty of places where talented programmers could apply their skills on all kinds of stuff never before thought of. THAT is called progress.

Instead, we have BILLIONS of people employed to shovel shit from this pile into that pile and then back again all their lives.

MS destroys the world of computer science and reaps all the benefits of knowing how to maintain a not quite stable pile of shit that needs to be shoveled constantly.

If we had reliable, cohesive computer science that grew equally for everyone, we as a species would be WAY farther than we are now.
