I'm sorry, but I just read some of Gary's last post about free is crap, etc...

I'm going to assume that this is all just for fun and to try to get my goat.

No one could truly be that unobservant of reality.

Linux is fine when you don't have to interact with it.  It works great in things like routers, servers, etc.  For those applications, it is a darn fine O/S.  Where it fails is user friendliness.  The reason it works well in those device and server apps is because the people dealing with it are computer scientists.  Put it in front of Jimmy Bob in his trailer and he isn't going to know what to do.  You might laugh at Jimmy Bob but most computer users are not far from the Jimmy Bob level.  They can run Setup.exe and change the screen save and run some apps but they have no idea what a kernel or know anything about command prompts.  These people aren't necessarily stupid, they just aren't computer savvy.  It's no different than the tech geeks that have to go to Jiffy Lube and get ripped off because they don't know how what or where an oil filter is.  Microsoft has put a lot of effort into making Windows work for the Jimmy Bobs and it has paid off.  There was no Windows when the x86 came out.  There was DOS and there wasn't much to it.  Linux was around prior to Win95 so there has been plenty of time for it to grow.

When I use this forum I am not using Linux, I am using a web application via a Microsoft browser.Big differece from using a Linux PC.

Microsoft has put a lot of effort into making Windows work for the Jimmy Bobs and it has paid off.

They have also done a similar thing for programmers now.. the whole .net suite.  They would like nothing more than for all of the example c++ code what solves the same problems to be deprecated and forgotten/removed to be replaced with the windows-only .net solutions.

Big difference? Really?

Boot up a Knoppix live CD on a computer with no hard drive at all. Once it's done booting and up and running, your text cursor is in the address line of a much better web browser than MSIE.

For FREE.

Which horses mouth did you get that from?  It wasn't from Microsofts.  Do 5 minutes of research and you will find out that you are wrong.

My own, it's my own idea about what they are trying to do based on what I've seen.  Do you doubt they would prefer and strive for windows only compatibility from 3rd party devs?

Knoppix.  LOL.

That's the sound of a truly experienced professional, who investigates any and all claims fully before offering his opinion!

Of course MS is trying to proprietarize EVERYTHING they can. That has been their business model from day ZERO!

Just look what they've done to my beloved C++ !!!

They use C/C++ to create a monster that is now trying to destroy it and everything else.

Why would they waste time creating a new language to prevent compatibility when they are already incompatible due to the O/S itself?  That's analogous to putting a bow on the head of Shaq in hopes of making him look like a girl.

If you are refering to Java, you might have a slight point, but C# is so superior to Java that it isn't even funny.  I say this from experience because I spent a great amount of time porting a Java program to C# and saw application performance by at LEAST a factor of 10.

If Microsoft only offered C++ would that make you happy?  It certainly wouldn't make businesses happy since development in C++ is considerably more costly than development in something like VB or Delphi.

Tell me what you think the correct solution is from the standpoint of compatibility, development costs, maintainability, and all of those other things that software companies care about.

I've used Knoppix.  Just the idea of spending 5 minutes to boot to an O/S for a web browser that is incapable of saving anything to a permanent file just made me laugh out loud.

Again, show the correct solution that fits the needs of a software company.  C++ isn't it.

You do realize that is in China, right?  All they do is copy other stuff in China.  Look at the lasers and galvos we have.  All copies of other stuff.  Microsoft China is not Microsoft USA.

OMG! Where do I start?

C/C++ is generic. There is a HUGE movement of people working toward OS independence. Things like Dev-C++ and SDL are some fabulous accomplishments toward this effort.

MS is muddying the water with C#. It totally MicroSoftens core concepts fundamental to the origin and root meaning of C AND C++. Now this is being served up as "knowledge" at universities all over the world. This "knowledge" is given as a suitable replacement for REAL UNDERSTANDING of UNIX, C and C++, in other words, COMPUTER SCIENCE.

C/C++ can NOT be fully realized in ANY MS OS. It was made to write UNIX and to write UNIX applications. The whole structure of the file IO and inter process communications, and a bunch of other tiny details DO NOT EXISTS in any MS OS!

At the end of the day, MS should have moved to a POSIX compliant kernel when the i386 came out to support such a thing. OS/2 was just exactly that. They wrote about 85% of it and it was first known as MS OS/2. IBM bought all of it away from MS. MS destroyed it with yet another pile of shit OS called Windows95. This was right after they got busted by Stacker for stealing their disc compression technology and putting it in MS DOS 6.20. I understand that MS is a business and they can not worry about right or wrong. But YOU can. I do!

MS should stick to what they do best; writing weenee PERSONAL COMPUTER operating systems and silly little games and shit that go with them. They should leave the professional, important work of computers to the real experts of the world and stop trying to fuck it all up for everyone.

Stick a thumb drive in it, dude.

Knoppix will auto mount anything offered as USB storage as read-write. If you knew anything about Linux, you'd know that Knoppix does mount any attached storage as read-only. It's trivial to unmount it and remount it read-write. The very fact that it needs NO persistant storage is EXACTLY what makes it so valuable. It can not be currupted or currupt your data! It is also trivial to setup a home directory on your USB storage so that Knoppix knows who you are and remembers all of your stuff between boots.

WAIT THERE'S MORE !!!

I'm still reading your drivel...... hold on.......

........................

OK. That's good for now.  ;)

I just can't take you seriously when you starting talking about C/C++ being generic and computer science and all that.  C/C++ is NOT generic.  But, there is generic C/C++.  There is also generic C#.  There is also generic pascal.  But, Delphi, a pascal language is not generic.  These are all different languages and are only a tiny portion of computer science.  Computer science is not C/C++.  If it was, C/C++ could never have been created since there would have been no chicken to lay the egg.  So, just stop with the talk about C/C++ being generic and computer science because it is stupid.  And as far as using generic code goes, that's nonsense to.  At some level the langauge has to interface with hardware or software layers that exist on the host and that can not and is not generic.  The reason LaserBoy is so crippled and does not have a GUI and is not able to output a lick of sound is because you got so tied up being generic that you lost sight of what a person would want to to do with your application.  The two things that a person should easily be able to do with LaserBoy (comfortably create laser "art" and then send it to a soundcard) are difficult and impossible.

It's ridiculous of you to say what Microsoft SHOULD have done when they are the most successful business on the planet and made the founder the richest person on the planet.  They did just fine with the decisions they made.   I don't think that the Lehman approval stamp counts as much in terms of success as world dominance.  That's just me, though.

Knoppix?  Come on.  It's nifty but it is irrelevant.  Why don't we talk about the MS Minesweeper game while we are at it.
