Ok, for those of you under 35 or so, you may need to do a little reading.

I remember this quite well.  I am considerably beyond the age you mention.  This actually brings back fond memories (even the annoying sound test).  When I was 10-12 years old I spent many evenings after school at the home of a neighbor who had a TV and radio repair shop in the basement of his home.  He very graciously allowed me to "help" him.  I can still picture the inside of a TV cabinet . . . a very large (and very heavy) picture tube, a lot of glowing, humming vacuum tubes and lots of very disorganized looking wires.  Also, by today's standards there was a lot of empty space.  There seemed to be a whole lot more "nothing" than there was "something" inside a TV cabinet.  This was the beginning of my love for the "magic" of electronics.

Also, he had two daughters who were quite easy on the eyes.

I thought it was appropriate to put up the celebrated test pattern after the forum had been down for a couple days; I almost
forgot about it until I seen it in a 70's movie recently. Yes, I've had my fat fingers inside a vacuum tube TV plenty of times as a kid.
I once got bit by a CRT from an old set in the garbage, it nearly knocked me down- they can hold a nasty charge for a long time!
Tubes still make the best guitar amps, I recently saw a new amp that was 90% semiconductor but had a single tube in the preamp stage.

I don't know. I called down there and had the machine rebooted like three times. It did not respond. My driveway was blocked today, so I walked downtown. It's about four miles. I walked into the server room and pressed the big red button myself. That was it.
